Previous Da Vinci Code Case in United States | Homepage 'Code' copy suit opens by Ellen Tumposky |

LONDON - February 28 2006 The author of the block-buster"The Da Vinci Code" was in a British court, fighting back against charges that he lifted key plot lines from an earlier work. Writers Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh say that Dan Brown took his "central theme" from their 1982 book, "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail." And they are charging publisher Random House, which holds the rights to their work, with copyright infringement. The case kicked off yesterday before Justice Peter Smith at the Royal Courts of Justice, near the medieval Temple Church which figures in the novel. |
Both books have a story line in which Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and had a child, but the Baigent-Leigh story has Christ surviving to live in France, an idea that Brown attacked. "Suggesting a married Jesus is one thing, but questioning the resurrection, undermines the very heart of Christian belief, " he told reporters. The film version of Brown's book, starring Tom Hanks, is set for release May 19, but its British distribution could be threatened if Baigent and Leigh win their case. Lawyer Jonathan James charged that Brown "appropriated the architecture" of "Holy Blood" and used as many as 15 of its theme points. Gail Rebuck, head of Random House UK, said the copyright-infringment claim was "without merit." |
