How do we know the Earth rotates?

In 1679 Newton wrote to Robert Hooke to explain that an object dropped from a tower can demonstrate Earth's rotation and predicted an eastward deviation for a falling body.

It wasn't until Focault in 1851 used a pendulum hanging from the domed ceiling of the Pantheon in Paris, was Earth rotation proven. The pendulum never retraced its path.
